If this sounds like you…

If you've spent the last 30 years building a career, raising a family, and carefully saving into an RRSP or workplace pension — only to reach your late 50s quietly wondering whether it will actually be enough — you're in the right place.

Or perhaps you've recently inherited or sold a property and now feel uncertain about what to do with it. Or maybe you're seriously considering a change — retiring early, or spending more time outside Canada — and you want clear, thoughtful guidance before you act.

If any of these situations sound familiar, I see you. You're exactly who I work with.

Who I work with

I work with business owners, professional women, and Alberta engineers and construction professionals who are within ten years of retirement. You've worked hard for decades and built meaningful assets. What's in front of you now is a different problem: turning all of it into an income without handing more of it to tax than you need to.

You don't need to be told to start saving — you've done that. What you need is a clear, trustworthy plan for what comes next.

Why I do this work

I've always been drawn to how money and business actually work. I started my first small business at age 11 and have been mostly self-employed ever since. Before I started my practice, I spent many years as an accountant in real estate and development, where I saw firsthand how the wealthy used strategies that most people never get to access.

What stayed with me most were the people I saw struggle — families left without a plan after losing a loved one, and individuals making emotional decisions with their money because no one had ever explained how it really worked. I realized I had something valuable to offer: clear, independent guidance that helps people protect what they've built and step into the next chapter with confidence.

That's also why I built this site as more than just a business card. You'll find free guides and financial insights, a suite of financial calculators, and a custom Canadian tax and financial calendar you can generate for your own situation — all free, no signup required. More tools are on the way. I created these because I believe everyone deserves access to clear financial information, whether or not they ever become a client.

My philosophy

Good financial planning is not about selling products. At its core, this work is deeply human. It touches the parts of life that carry the greatest emotional weight — taxes, wills, estates, retirement, and the legacy we leave behind.

I believe most people are dramatically overinsured on things that don't truly protect their future, and dramatically underinsured on the things that do: clear plans, proper estate structures, and thoughtful tax strategies. If you cannot clearly explain your financial decisions to your spouse in five minutes, someone is likely selling you complexity rather than clarity.

Because I work independently and on a fee-only basis, my advice is never influenced by what a product pays me — there are no commissions, no referral fees, no hidden incentives. I'm also financially independent myself, which means I work purely because I love this and believe in what it does for people. My only motivation is giving you the clearest, most honest advice I can.

Why you can trust the advice I give

I've spent more than 25 years helping people make important financial decisions. I'm a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI®) — a designation awarded to only the top 3% of advisors in Canada.

Because I work on a fee-only, independent basis, I have no financial incentive to recommend one product over another. My only job is to give you the clearest advice for your situation. Many of my client relationships have lasted for decades — and that continuity is something I take genuine pride in.

I also believe in giving back. Every Tuesday, I run low-fee tax filing clinics at seniors' residences across Edmonton.

"Joanne took the time to understand my whole situation — not just my portfolio. For the first time, I feel genuinely in control of my financial future."

Kris V. — Calgary, AB

"Finally, an advisor who explains things clearly and doesn't make me feel like I should already know everything. Joanne is the real deal."

Kim S. — Saskatoon, SK

A little about me

Long-term relationships matter to me.

I've worked with many of my clients since the very beginning of my practice. I've always believed that simply showing up reliably, year after year, is one of the most meaningful ways to demonstrate care.

My roots run deep in Alberta.

I've always felt a strong connection to this province. Even during the years I lived in Vancouver — where I met my engineer spouse — I stayed closely tied to Alberta. That sense of loyalty and knowing where I come from has always been important to me.

Western Canada is where we feel most at home.

Every year my family and I explore and reconnect with the beauty of Western Canada. We drive the mountains and, for the past five years, have spent part of our summers and falls in small-town Saskatchewan, where the skies feel endless and the people have the biggest hearts. No matter where we wander, Alberta is always where we find our way back home — usually with our rescue dog Buddy, who joined us from Slave Lake and hasn't missed a trip since.
